Americans for Prosperity Foundation Sends 'I 'Heart' Hypocrisy' T-Shirts to 'Rock the Vote' Staffers to Wear to Wednesday's Dinner, Protest
WASHINGTON, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- In advance of Wednesday's protest of the annual Rock the Vote (RTV) Awards Dinner, the free-market grassroots group Americans for Prosperity Foundation today sent t-shirts reading "I 'Heart' Hypocrisy" to RTV staffers so they will be appropriately attired at the event. The logo on the light blue shirts is very similar to the design on Rock the Vote's line of "I 'Heart' Social Security" gear sold on the group's website, which includes t-shirts, buttons and even post-trend trucker caps.
Americans for Prosperity Foundation is organizing a youth protest of Rock the Vote's June 8th awards dinner in response to RTV's strong opposition to letting America's young workers voluntarily invest part of their Social Security taxes in higher-yielding personal retirement accounts.
Personal accounts would allow millions of younger workers to have part of their Social Security taxes automatically invested in secure, diversified bond funds and stock funds, similar to what many workers already do with 401(k) plans and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs.) A new Zogby poll that was released this week shows that the strongest support for personal accounts comes from citizens under age 30, who embrace the idea by a margin of 66 percent to 23 percent.
"Claiming to represent the best interests of young people and then fighting every effort to give young people more control over their own money and retirement security is practically the dictionary definition of 'hypocrisy,'" said Americans for Prosperity spokesman Ed Frank. "Young Americans know that Rock the Vote doesn't speak for them, especially when it comes to their own retirement security, and they're going to make that clear at Wednesday's rally in Washington. I think these t-shirts will fit the Rock the Vote staff very well at their big dinner."
The Americans for Prosperity Foundation protest will begin at 5:30 p.m. outside the National Building Museum, which is located at 401 F St., NW, near the Judiciary Square Metro station.
