Air America's Al Franken to Add International Radio Award to Emmy, Grammy and Bookselling Accolades
NEW YORK, June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Board of Judges of New York Festivals' International Radio Programming and Promotions Awards has selected comedian/author Al Franken to be the first recipient of its "World Achievement Award for Breakthrough Radio" for his very unique perspective and commentary on his daily radio show, "The Al Franken Show" on Air America. The special award will be selectively and only periodically given to one radio on- air talent who has significantly made a great political or cultural impact in his country and/or throughout the world. Franken will be given the World Achievement Award at a special tribute at the 23rd annual International Radio Programming and Promotions Awards show at New York City's China Club on Monday, June 27 at 8:00 p.m.
The International Radio Programming and Promotions Awards (IRPP) honors the world's best radio programming with gold, silver and bronze World medals. The multi-national competition, produced by the Manhattan-based New York Festivals, received over 500 entries from 32 countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, Brazil and even Afghanistan. Tickets, which include a dinner starting at 7:00 p.m., are $265.00 (US) and can be purchased online at www.newyorkfestivals.com or call the New York Festivals' office at 212-643-4800.
The New York Festivals' IRPP Awards show is the only radio competition where programming from different countries competes head-to-head with each other, similar to the Cannes Film Festival. The competition is divided into 10 major categories which are On-Air Talent, Morning Drive-Time, Programming Format, News Programs, Talk Programs, Entertainment, Information/Documentary, News Inserts, Promotion Spots & IDs and Craft & Technique.
SNL alum Al Franken will add the radio accolade to his collection of Emmy and Grammy awards. He won four Emmys for his writing on SNL and a fifth for producing. A native of Minnesota, Franken is also a best-selling author; his most recent book, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right," was on The New York Times bestseller list for 35 weeks. The Harvard graduate won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word album in 2003 for the recording of Lies. The second season of the television version of "The Al Franken Show" returned to The Sundance Channel on June 6.
