Harris Corporation Supplies Rainbow Network Communications With State-of-the-Art System for Intelligent, Automated Management Of Rich Media Content
Invenio(R) Asset Management Syncs With ADC(TM) Automation and Front Porch Digital's Archive Management to Increase Functionality, Productivity and Cost Savings in VOD Application
LAS VEGAS, April 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) today announced the implementation of a sophisticated, searchable, digital media archive at Rainbow Network Communications (RNC), a multi-channel service provider and subsidiary of Rainbow Media Holdings that provides video- on-demand (VOD) services for channels and national networks. The solution integrates Harris' Digital Asset Management Solution and Playout Automation Solution.
"The functionality of Harris' metadata classification is unlike anything we envisioned," said John Barbieri, senior vice president and general manager, Rainbow Network Communications. "It has the flexibility to cater to our customers' individual ingesting, cataloging and archiving schemas, and ensures Rainbow can serve a diverse set of VOD-centric customers with exacting content demands."
The Harris Invenio(R) media asset management product interfaces with an existing 80-seat ADC(TM) automation system and archive system from Front Porch Digital Inc., improving RNC's profit margins with new DTV broadcasting opportunities. RNC is using the Harris Invenio tool suite to search, browse, catalog, archive and control the organization's automation system, which maintains and updates the vital metadata associated with new VOD media files.
RNC needed a sophisticated digital asset management system to handle its immense digital media collection and the requests culled from its client base of on-demand content companies. RNC's clients have access to the central content repository where they can query a play-out server about its inventory or monitor its collections looking for new files, and then automatically ingest new files so that they become part of their facility's media management archives.
The Harris solution also creates hi-res on-air assets, controls Front Porch's DIVArchive system, and manages the transcoding performed by BitScream for Internet streaming applications. This provides content access to multiple simultaneous users across departments for desktop editing, browsing, and review. Additionally, RNC's clients have the ability to customize the metadata fields that are relevant to their business unit.
The integration of RNC's automation and asset management technology occurs on two levels: via device control (through source, destination and review devices), and via media movement (transferring of files between locations, such as a central archive and an on-air playout server).
"The solution at Rainbow showcases Harris' powerful, sophisticated digital asset management and transcoding capabilities as they're integrated with broadcast automation," said Jim Woods, vice president and general manager of the Automation and Digital Asset Management Solutions business unit of Harris Broadcast Communications Division. "The system we delivered is based on the 'ingest once, output many' model. Having to ingest content only once into their distribution network offers enormous efficiencies and cost savings. Being able to output via fibre to multiple devices in multiple formats represents the upside for Rainbow's workflow pipeline."
