BBC Misses Opportunity to Host Election Abortion Debate
LONDON, April 25/PRNewswire/ -- The Catholic Action Group (C.A.G) is disappointed that in it's view the BBC has missed a real opportunity to demonstrate it is balanced on current morals issues such as abortion in the lead up to the general election. As politicians consistently dodge these issues, surely the BBC can fill the void suggests the C.A.G. C.A.G requested that such a public debate should be conducted in good time by a previous press release in the run up to the general election. So far this has been ignored. It has also issued a very pro-life Catholic Voter's Guide which is being advertised nationally and is available free from its website at www.catholic-action.com.
John Gunn - the groups National Coordinator stated "Whilst the BBC has covered many election issues, it has not in the public interest adequately raised the abortion issue even though a recent national poll showed that well over 50% of the population favour a reduction in the legal abortion limit? Moral issues are very important in MP candidate selection but few candidates willingly or openly discuss these issues or let the public know how they will vote on life."
Earlier, C.A.G was encouraged when Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor spoke out publicly for the first time on abortion and thereby appeared to raise its current political profile. It is less encouraged now that we are in the election run up that all church leaders appear to be silent. C.A.G humbly suggests that this is the time they should be most vociferous. A little bit of courage can go a long way.
Chris Walsh the group's pro-life spokesperson stated "In any election year, abortion is a topic that needs to be debated both publicly and fairly. The future of 900,000 pre-born babies over the next parliament term lies in the balance. Church leaders, must not be silent on this, their leadership is required. There has not been a fair public televised debate on this issue."
As a Catholic organisation whose sole aim is to promote Catholic truth, Robert Williams, the group's Secretary commented "For Catholics, abortion is one of the key non-negotiables."
C.A.G - is an independent Catholic organisation. It has been established to defend Catholic truth nationally in the United Kingdom through action both inside and outside of the Church. Membership is open to all mainstream orthodox Catholics who are fully obedient to the teaching Magisterium with the Pope at its head and all Bishops obedient to the Pope.
Most recently it has promoted Catholic boycotts of CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) for its controversial HIV/AIDS - ABC (Abstain, Be Faithful, Use a Condom) policy and also Comic Relief for its funding of pro-abortion organisations.
