Chicago Headline Club Announces Winners in High School Newspaper Contest
CHICAGO, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chicago Headline Club chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists today announced the winners in its 2004-05 High School Newspaper Contest, which recognizes writing and reporting from Chicago area students.
Oak Park-River Forest High School was named overall best student newspaper, and also had the most first-place finishes among individual student awards.
High school newspaper advisers nominated work from their top students in record numbers in 2005. Professional journalists served as volunteer judges to choose from hundreds of submissions published throughout the school year in news, features, opinion, sports, photography, artwork and in-depth reporting categories.
The overall student newspaper category compares the finished collaborative product of schools across the Chicago area. Judges this year named the following Top Ten high school newspapers from the Chicago region:
1. Oak Park-River Forest 2. Evanston Township 3. Homewood-Flossmoor 4. St. Charles East 5. Stevenson (Lincolnshire) 6. Deerfield 7. Lyons Township 8. Wm. Fremd (Palatine) 9. Glenbrook South 10. Prospect (Mt. Prospect)
Among the Chicago Public Schools, Northside College Prep claimed the title of top school paper for the second year in a row.
The annual honors are open to senior high school students throughout Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry and Will counties. The contest is the largest such awards program in Illinois and one of the largest regional honors in the country.
The Chicago Headline Club also sponsors the Peter Lisagor Awards for Exemplary Journalism, which is open to professional journalists from the Chicago area. Winners in that contest will be honored in an April 29 banquet at the Westin Chicago River North, 320 N. Dearborn, Chicago. Matthew Cooper, White House correspondent for Time magazine, will be guest speaker.
The Society of Professional Journalists is a volunteer organization dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior.
Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, the society holds a time-honored role in inspiring and educating generations of journalists. SPJ sponsors the national Sigma Delta Chi competition for professional journalists and the Mark of Excellence awards for collegiate publications.
