KTSF to Expand Use of English Subtitles on April 1 with Premier of New Epic Primetime Mandarin Drama Series

Mandarin Series Now Also Accessible to Chinese and English-Speaking Viewers

SAN FRANCISCO, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Local broadcaster KTSF will expand its use of English subtitles when it debuts a new primetime one-hour drama, Warriors of the Yang Clan, this Friday, April 1, 2005 at 9:00 p.m. The Bay Area's Asian-language TV station announced it would offer both English and Chinese subtitles for the big-budget 34-episode Mandarin-language series. The premiere show will also be broadcast commercial free.

Warriors of the Yang Clan, is a epic-sized costume drama taking place in the Sung Dynasty of China. It focuses on Yang Ye, one of the most significant military generals of the era and father of the influential Yang family, as he achieves glorious war exploits for the country. This production about chivalry and family loyalty uses storylines from celebrated Chinese operas including Si Lang Tan Mu and, Jin Sha and includes actors from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea including Alec Su, Chae Rim, Angie Chiu Nga-chi and Hu Jing.

KTSF General Manager Michael Sherman said this would be the first of many Chinese dramas to have English subtitles in the coming year.

"We've gotten great response from our initial testing of English subtitles," said Sherman, "because they've allowed Asian households with several generations to watch the same show. More subtitled programming will allow English-speaking households to also discover some of the same great original Asian programming that we broadcast in the Bay Area."

Warriors of the Yang Clan will be broadcast:

-- Monday through Friday -- 9:00 - 10:00 p.m. -- April 1 - May 18, 2005 -- with English and Chinese subtitles -- with no commercial interruptions on its April 1 premier -- on Channel 26 (cable channel 8 on Comcast Cable) throughout the greater Bay Area market, and over DirecTV and the Dish Network

Reaching beyond specific in-language audiences, KTSF currently broadcasts Japanese dramas with English subtitles on Saturday evenings. Warriors of the Yang Clan will be the first primetime Chinese drama to use of English subtitles.

In addition to using subtitles, KTSF is also pushing beyond its in-language base by producing broadcasts such as StirTV -- the first English language show for and about Asian America's next generation.
