TVO Calls On Aspiring Ontario Filmmakers To Enter The 2016 Short Doc Contest

TORONTO, Feb. 4, 2016 /CNW/ - Now underway, the 2016 TVO Short Doc Contest is a great way for aspiring Ontario filmmakers to jumpstart their careers. Participants can submit their short film by March 24, 2016, for a chance to win prizes from the Doc Institute and the Canadian Film Centre, plus cash prizes sponsored by Telefilm Canada, and much more. The top film, as voted on by the public, will also air on TVO.

"TVO's Short Doc Contest is an opportunity for all Ontarians to add their voices to the dialogue about the issues and values that shape our province and the world at large," says John Ferri, Vice President, Current Affairs and Documentaries.

Participants are asked to create a documentary five minutes in length or less that interprets this year's theme: Shared Values - A lens through which we see the world. Documentaries should explore what an inclusive society looks like and where it falls short. Some topics, for example, can include accessibility, gender, sexuality, class, urban/rural/suburban issues, age, multiculturalism, disability, or any other form of inclusivity or discrimination.

All documentaries submitted are screened by a panel of leaders in the documentary industry including TVO 2016 Short Doc Contest featured filmmakers Sunny Yi and John Haslett Cuff (founders of the Documentary Filmmaking Institute). The panel will select a short list to be voted on by the public.

The first place winner will have their documentary air on TVO and stream on tvo.org, and will receive $2000 cash sponsored by Telefilm Canada, a pitch session with Jane Jankovic, TVO's Executive Producer of Documentaries, $3000 worth of equipment rental from William F. White International, and two days of mentoring from Sunny Yi and John Haslett Cuff.

Second place receives $1000 sponsored by Telefilm Canada and includes a one year membership and one year free programming at the Doc Institute along with mentorship from a Doc Institute board member.

Third place receives $500 sponsored by Telefilm Canada plus two tickets to the Canadian Film Centre's Toronto International Film Festival BBQ, and a documentary workshop from the Canadian Film Centre.

Public voting begins April 7 at www.tvo.org/shortdoc and closes April 18. The winner will be announced April 19.
