Pianist Dr. Ayse Taspinar Gatenyo, LA Phil Violinist Mark Kashper to Perform at Holocaust Remembrance Concert and Screening
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Pianist Dr. Ayse Taspinar Gatenyo will join LA Philharmonic violinist Mark Kashper for a concert in remembrance of the Holocaust, followed by a screening of the documentary, "Turkish Passport" on February 29, 2016 at The Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel in LA. The event is hosted by the Turkish Consulate in LA, and sponsored by The Sephardic Temple Tifereth and the Turkish American Artists Bridge (TAAB), an organization dedicated to supporting artists.
The evening's program will feature "Theme from Schindler's List" and "Remembrances" by John Williams, as well as a piece by Johann Sebastian Bach. This is part of a series of concerts featuring these and other musicians, sponsored by TAAB, including an upcoming Gala at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion on May 7.
Kashper is the LA Philharmonic's Associate Principal Second Violin and has been with the orchestra since 1978, after arriving in the United States as a refugee from Russia. He is also the founder and concertmaster of the LA Jewish Symphony and has been featured as a soloist throughout Southern California and around the world.
Dr. Taspinar Gatenyo is an international pianist who has performed in New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Rome, Buenos Aires and numerous other cities. In 2009, she received a doctorate from the University of California in L.A. specializing in piano music in the Ottoman Empire. Born in Paris, Taspinar studied in Turkey, Italy and the U.S. and won top prizes at several international competitions.
"Turkish Passport" is a documentary directed by Burak Arliel telling the story of Turkish diplomats who saved the lives of Jews in Europe during World War II. The film was released in 2011 and was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and other prestigious festivals. It was a finalist at the European Independent Film Festival for the Best Documentary award in 2012.
