NEW YORK, Feb. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Big Apple Performing Arts (BAPA), the home of the New York City Gay Men's Chorus and Youth Pride Chorus, today announced the recipients of the Arts in Action Award and Gary Miller Award for 2016 to be presented at Harmony, New York City's gala and party to benefit the NYCGMC and YPC on February 22, 2016 starting at 6pm at the Diamond Horseshoe. The very first recipient of the newly created Arts in Action Award, to be given to an artist who has found success in the field of entertainment and uses that success to inspire change, is award winning writer and performer Lisa Kron, who most recently won two Tony Awards for her work as librettist and lyricist for the musical Fun Home.
The second recipient of the Gary Miller Award, given to someone who has made a significant contribution to LGBTQ arts in New York City and is named after the first conductor of the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, is Maria-Elena Grant who has been an advocate for the LGBTQ community for more than 25 years. The award was given to its namesake, Gary Miller, at last year's Harmony Gala.
"Last year was the first year of the Gary Miller Award and this year we are thrilled to be adding the Arts in Action Award to our annual Harmony Gala," said chair of Big Apple Performing Arts, Jason Sirois. "Our mission is to support LGBTQ identified performing groups whose members unite to entertain, educate, and advocate through the power of performance. We believe it is important to recognize others who support our mission through their work in an effort to strengthen and develop a community that continues to thrive."
BAPA Artistic Director, Charles Beale, commented on the recipients by saying, "We believe Lisa Kron is an artistic leader who serves as an inspirational champion for positive change not only for the LGBTQ community but also for everyone committed to more deeply exploring the 'house' in which we live.
Beale went on to say, "Maria-Elena is the perfect person to follow Gary Miller's acceptance last year. She is an inspiration to us at BAPA with over 25 years of activism and art and we look forward to her continued efforts working tirelessly for the LGBTQ community."
