Is America Ready for Caitlyn Jenner?

Is America Ready for Caitlyn Jenner?

Research shows many Americans are not yet comfortable with her transition, while younger audiences feel more favorable to her.

LOS ANGELES, July 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Just ahead of the launch of her reality series "I Am Cait," new research from E-Score shows that U.S. audiences are ambivalent towards Caitlyn Jenner, with most holding a negative or undecided opinion of her. Currently Jenner is liked by 23% of those surveyed by E-Score, while 34% dislike her. This compares to the average of 51% like / 4% dislike for a TV personality.

A marked divide along generational lines exists, with younger Americans holding a much more favorable opinion with 37% of 13 - 24 year olds liking her, compared to only 19% of those ages 25 - 54.

E-Score, which has data on more than 8,000 celebrities covering more than 15 years, also tracked the change in attitudes between Caitlyn and Bruce Jenner. In making the transition from Bruce to Caitlyn, Jenner saw her awareness decline by 6%, from 64% to 58%, while her positive appeal ("like") rose from 19% to 23%, and her negative appeal ("dislike") rose from 24% to 34%. She is far more polarizing since the transition.

"Based on respondent comments, many people are not sure about Caitlyn's motives for the show given her recent history as a reality star," says Gerry Philpott, CEO of E-Poll Market Research, which produces E-Score. "They will be looking to see if she is exploiting the transition for publicity and money, or is sincere in her efforts to present transgender issues."

Each E-Score survey is conducted among 1,100 persons with general representation across income, age, education and geographic demographics to represent a cross-section of the U.S. population.
