Major William H. Bode said, "Beacon Roofing Supply's support of The Salvation Army is a blessing. It is very difficult to serve effectively and efficiently without proper equipment. Thanks to their generosity, our staff and volunteers in Westmoreland County are better equipped to provide assistance to first responders and victims alike during times of great need. We thank God for friends and partners who express their support of others, whether it be in Westmoreland County or throughout the world."

Pennsylvania State Senator Kim Ward, State Representative Tim Krieger, and The Mayor of Delmont Borough Alyce Urban will all be on hand at the dedication ceremony to talk about the importance of The Salvation Army and to show their support. The Salvation Army band will provide music for the occasion, and "Donut Lassies" will be providing complimentary donuts donated by Entenmann's in celebration of National Donut Day.

The new Disaster Response Unit is outfitted with the latest equipment and technology to assist disaster response personnel in helping community members and first responders during and after emergency situations. The custom-designed and built unit features a fully functional kitchen where workers and volunteers can prepare meals to feed approximately 2,500 people per day.

About National Donut Day:
The Salvation Army established National Donut Day in 1938 to commemorate its service to soldiers during World War I. In 1917, about 250 Salvation Army volunteers traveled overseas and set up small huts located near the front lines where they could give soldiers clothes, supplies and baked goods. Conditions necessitated the clever idea of frying donuts in soldiers' helmets. Nicknamed "donut lassies," the women who served donuts to troops are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States, when the troops (nicknamed "doughboys") returned home from war. The donut now serves as a symbol of the social services The Salvation Army provides to those in need. The Salvation Army still serves donuts, in addition to warm meals and hydration during times of disasters.
