MISA enters African Children's Film Festival competition
WINDHOEK, Namibia, 18 May 2015 / PRN Africa / -- Two of MISA's 'In the Zone' (Teenage Pregnancy and Suicide) short film documentaries are eligible and have been submitted for the African Children's Film Festival competition, scheduled to take place in Windhoek, Namibia, from August 1 to 6, 2015.
AFRIKIKAS (meaning "African Childrenʼs Film Days Kassel") is in its second year. In 2013 its founders established the NGO "FÖRDERKREIS AFRIKIKAS e.V." in order to finance and organise the African Films Days. The idea of founding an African Children's Film Festival was created by Robert Atangana, a student at the University of Kassel (Department of Visual Communication), who felt that there was no platform to showcase film productions by African children that highlight issues of concern to them.
MISA's media products are part of its ongoing Children and Media Project. In 2014, 200 copies of 'In the Zone' newsletter and 100 copies DVD with film and radio documentaries were produced and distributed to child participants, interviewees, children's organisations, Media houses and Government officials in Lesotho and Namibia. The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) also aired the 'In the Zone' DVD during the week of the 15th of September 2014.
A total of 22 children aged between 12 to 17 from various socio-economic backgrounds participated in the media productions (print and broadcasting) in Namibia and Lesotho in 2014. The children received a foundation workshop which prepared them for the media productions workshop where, based on their chosen medium, they were facilitated by a print journalist, children's radio producer and a film director and producer.
The first African Children's Film Festival took place in Kassel in 2014. See www.afrikikas.de for more information.
