SAO PAULO, May 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Brazil has been conquering the world of surfing, bringing new talents to the World Circuit and expanding the 'Brazilian Storm' - the nickname given to this new generation of Brazilian surfers. But Brazil catching a wave in the sport that has become everyone's passion is more than just a contemporary phenomenon. Rico de Souza, one of Brazil's surfing pioneers, takes us through its history in the documentary "RICO. 60 years of Rico de Souza and surfing in Brazil," which premieres on May 22nd at 4 p.m. at the San Diego Surf Film Festival in California.
Directed by Guga Sander and produced by Sentimental Filme, this feature-length documentary portrays the trajectory of the surfer Rico, who to live his own dream devoted himself to creating the market in Brazil that he wanted to work in. Creator of the first surfing school and the first wave bulletin in Brazil, Rico was 3-time surfing Champion in the 1970's, 3-time Champion on the longboard in the 1980's, and 2-time world longboard vice-champion. His name has also appeared in the Guinness Book of Records for bringing together the largest number of surfers on a single wave, and for surfing with the biggest surfboard ever made. With footage from Hawaii, the Maldives, Rio de Janeiro and Santos, Brazil, the film features reminiscences by the great names in national and international surfing, such as Fred Hemmings, world Champion in 1968, who for 10 years was a Senator from Hawaii, Randy Rarick, director of the Hawaiian Triple Crown, who has been involved in surfing championships in the Hawaiian islands for decades, Clyde Aikau, brother of Hawaiian hero, Eddie Aikau, Fast Eddie, leader of the Hawaiian "Black Trunks," as well as stars from Brazil's pop world, Evandro Mesquita and Kadu Moliterno. The festival, which is taking place from May 20th to 23rd, will feature panel discussions, workshops, a surfing art gallery, live music, as well as the presentation of more than 20 international films to be screened in the Sherwood Auditorium at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla Beach.
