National Animal Shelter Reform Leader, Author, Brings Redemption to Atlanta August 21

Based on the award-winning, highly-acclaimed book of the same title, Redemption, a documentary film about the No Kill revolution in America by author and national No Kill advocate Nathan J. Winograd calls attention to the estimated four million animals that are losing their lives annually in animal shelters across the nation and, more importantly, offers a solution. A 2009 survey estimated that Georgia shelters killed an estimated 260,000 dogs and cats annually, 62% of those taken in.

"Redemption tells the story of animal sheltering in the United States - a movement that was born of compassion and then lost its way," explains Winograd, "But there is hope. Over the last several years, progressive communities across the country have put into place a series of innovative programs and services that have ended the killing of homeless companion animals in their communities. The film covers the history of animal sheltering in the U.S., beginning with the 1866 founding of the first SPCA in New York City, the rise of the No Kill movement in the 1990s, and continuing to today's No Kill success in diverse communities across the nation, including Marquette, Michigan; Ithaca, New York; Austin, Texas; and Reno, Nevada.

"In 2000, there were zero No Kill communities in the entire United States, then in 2001, there was one," says Valerie Hayes, a Georgia resident, who was a volunteer at the shelter that created the first No Kill community. "Now there are hundreds all across the country. I thought that ending the killing of shelter pets in a community was a distant goal until we actually did it. It takes the right leadership and a lot of hard work, but it can be done and must be done. I am very excited to be bringing this event to Georgia."

"Redemption" will be screened in select cities to audiences nationwide as part of Winograd's 25-city national "No Kill Is Love" tour. The film made its debut on June 6, 2014 at St. Anthony Main Theater in Minneapolis, MN, before being shown in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Austin, San Francisco, and elsewhere. The film sold out in several cities. The public is invited to the Atlanta screening, which will be followed by a presentation on how animal lovers can reform their local shelters and bring No Kill to their communities.
