This year marks 36 years since Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the founding father and the first
president of the Kenya passed on at State House, Mombasa, on August 22, 1978.
He was a well-educated intellectual who authored several books, and is remembered as a
Pan-Africanist. He is also the father of Kenya's fourth and current President Uhuru
Kenyatta.
In a presidency spanning 14 years, from 1963 until his death in 1978, Kenyatta was
considered an icon to his people and well known for his trademark slogan, Harambee, a
Swahili word to mean working or pulling together.
