PHOENIX, May 17, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mayors Against Illegal Guns today announced a new television ad holding Senator Jeff Flake accountable for not keeping his word to Arizonans Caren and Tom Teves, whose son Alex was killed in the Aurora theatre shooting while shielding his fiancee. The Teves, who voted for Senator Flake in 2012, sent a letter to their Senator asking him to vote for background check legislation and he responded that, "strengthening background checks is something we agree on." Just one month later, Senator Flake voted against bipartisan legislation proposed by NRA A-rated Senators Pat Toomey and Joe Manchin - and supported by Senator John McCain - that would have closed loopholes that make it easy for dangerous people to get guns.
Senator Flake voted with the Washington gun lobby and in doing so, broke his promise to the Teves and disregarded the 90 percent of Arizona voters who support this commonsense and life-saving reform.
The new television ad entitled "My Son" will begin airing today in the Phoenix and Tucson media markets on broadcast and cable through May 30. The ad can be seen here: www.DemandAction.org/Flake
About Mayors Against Illegal Guns
Since its creation in April 2006, Mayors Against Illegal Guns has grown from 15 members to more than 900 mayors from across the country. We have more than 1.5 million grassroots supporters, making us the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country. The bipartisan coalition, co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, has united the nation's mayors around these common goals: protecting communities by holding gun offenders accountable; demanding access to crime gun trace data that is critical to law enforcement efforts to combat gun trafficking; and working with legislators to fix weaknesses and loopholes in the law that make it far too easy for criminals and other dangerous people to get guns.
