News Icon Don Shelby Joins BringMeTheNews

BMTN Will Also Launch Community Feature 'Shelby Shares' and Add Regular Original Content

MINNEAPOLIS, March 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Veteran newsman Don Shelby is bringing his decades of experience and his unmistakable voice to BringMeTheNews (BMTN). Shelby will be anchoring morning drive-time newscasts and also developing news stories for the pioneering online broadcast news curator beginning April 4.

"We are beyond excited to welcome Don Shelby, one of the Twin Cities' most venerable news icons, to our team of highly experienced journalists," said Rick Kupchella, founder of BMTN. "For the past two years BMTN has been forging an innovative path in providing up-to-date news through our growing network of radio stations, online and social media sites. We've also worked hard to strategically add seasoned journalists to our team and you don't get much more integrity, talent and experience than Don Shelby. This is a phenomenal addition."

Shelby will be the voice of the morning drive on nearly three dozen radio stations in BMTN's network at 6 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 7 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 8 a.m., 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. BMTN is distributed through a network of online and social media sites, and its broadcasts are heard 7,500 times a month.

Shelby Shares

In addition to his anchor duties, Shelby will be reporting and developing original content for BMTN. Communities around the state will also get a chance to have the Shelby spotlight shine on them through a new segment called Shelby Shares. From now until April 30, BMTN is asking individuals to send in stories about their community, using 400 words or less, or submit a two-minute YouTube video to http://bring.mn/296965. The BMTN team is looking for a variety of story ideas from great successes to concerns within a community. Stories are welcome from schools, chambers of commerce, city councils, community and business organizations, nonprofits, individuals and more. At least three stories will be chosen for the monthly feature, which will include a visit from Shelby and an in-depth story that will be featured on BMTN.

"I have witnessed a lot of changes in the news business and am looking forward to telling the amazing stories that make Minnesota great," said Shelby. "I am excited to join BMTN and be a part of this new chapter in journalism. I'm especially excited about the opportunity to launch Shelby Shares and tell in-depth stories about what's going on around our state."

Shelby signed off from WCCO-TV in 2010 after 32 years with the station.

In addition to Shelby and Kupchella, the BMTN team of on-air personalities includes former KARE-11 news anchor Amy Hockert, KARE-11 sports anchor Eric Perkins and former MPR reporter Art Hughes. In addition, Doug Frattallone, formerly of Internet Broadcasting, William Wilcoxen, formerly of MPR, Dave Gustafson, formerly of the Star Tribune and Josh Knodle, formerly of KTTC-TV in Rochester are all part of BMTN's team of content curators who sift, edit and gather Minnesota-related news from hundreds of news sources and distribute it through a network of online and social media sites.
