TUESDAY, JANUARY 4: 75 YEARS OF POP MUSIC CHARTS
Profile America -- Tuesday, January 4th. You might think that the idea of listing top-rated songs started with Casey Kasem. But the idea of the pop music chart originated 75 years ago on this date, when Billboard Magazine published such a list for the week ending December 30, 1935. That first chart included 78 rpm records by Ozzie Nelson and his orchestra and Tommy Dorsey, whose version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" was a best seller. Today's charts feature names such as Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. The way people buy and listen to music is changing, too. Now, music fans buy over a billion dollars worth of digital downloads a year, just over twice as much as they spend on CDs. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
