WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16: 50th ANNIVERSARY OF "PSYCHO " PREMIERE
Profile America -- Wednesday, June 16th. Fifty years ago today, one of the most influential films in Hollywood history had its premiere -- "Psycho," starring Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh. Perkins played the role of Norman Bates, who ran the creepy Bates Motel. Janet Leigh was murdered in the famous shower scene, which film historians credit with introducing the slasher genre of movies. "Psycho" had a lukewarm reception with the critics, but they soon changed their minds as the movie became a box office hit. Today, the film is included in many lists of the best movies ever made. When "Psycho" was released in 1960, 44 million people a week went to the movies. That figure is now 27 million a week.
