Summer Movie Nights in the Vineyards Benefit Local Charities
NAPA, Calif. June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Sterling Vineyards, the landmark Napa Valley winery, announced the eighth annual Sterling Silver Screen Series outdoor movie season. Through the generosity of co-sponsor NBC Universal®, the 2010 Sterling Silver Screen Series will feature classic and "neo-classic" films, in a variety of genres, from the Universal archives. All proceeds from the summer screenings will benefit local charities through Sterling's Stars & Vines Fund with the Napa Valley Community Foundation. In the past seven years of summer movies, the nonprofit program has raised more than $110,000 for local charities.
The popular screening nights will begin on Saturday, July 17 with the 1975 classic blockbuster Jaws. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...Sterling kicks the summer season off with Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss, directed by Stephen Spielberg in a really big fish tale.
Sterling Silver Screenings continue with Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein on Saturday, July 31. Made in 1948, and included on many critics "best movie list", this is a perfect horror comedy or comic horror flick. The bumbling Abbot and Costello antics inspire belly laughs, as well as genuine chills, as they unexpectedly meet Lon Chaney and Bela Lugosi in a wax museum.
The Breakfast Club on Saturday, August 14 is the 1985 coming-of-age neo-classic written and directed by the late John Hughes. Five very different high school students come together during one Saturday detention. This movie features brat packers Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall and that memorable blockbuster soundtrack single by Simple Minds.
The season concludes with The Trouble with Harry, on Saturday, August 28, a classic 1955 black comedy from the "master" - Alfred Hitchcock. A body is found in the woods and guilty hilarity ensues. Panned when first released, this movie has become a cult favorite. The film stars Shirley MacLaine, Ed Gwenn and John Forsythe and, as always, a cameo from Hitchcock himself.
"We receive great community support for our outdoor movie nights" said Liz Lease, Sterling Vineyards' hospitality manager. "We start getting calls in January asking about our summer schedule and the season line up. This is a super way for couples and families to enjoy an inexpensive, festive evening of entertainment and also benefit local charities."
Each screening offers wine tasting, snack concessions and festival seating on the Sterling Vineyard Meadow at Sterling Vineyards, 1111 Dunaweal Lane in Calistoga. Most Sterling Silver Screen films are suitable for informed family viewing, however, parents are suggested to review MPAA advisories online in advance of attendance - and note that some films are not rated.
The grounds open at 7 p.m. and guests are encouraged to arrive early, dress in warm layers, and bring a blanket or low backed beach chairs to sit on. A pre-show of classic cartoons, followed by the feature presentation, begins at dusk. Admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children (under 16). All proceeds from tickets sales and a percentage of wine sales benefit the non-profit Stars & Vines Fund. More information is available online at www.sterlingvineyards.com, or by calling (707) 942-3322.
The Community Foundation of the Napa Valley is a non-profit organization that benefits many local charitable causes in need of funds. Through the Foundation, individuals, families and corporations can donate funds in trust to support the wellbeing of all Napa County residents now and in the future. The Stars & Vines fund, founded by Sterling Vineyards with the CFNV, was established to help support various needs of the farm working community. Past proceeds from Sterling Silver Screenings have assisted the Calistoga Family Center, the St Helena Family Center, the Family Economic Success Program and the Calistoga Farmworker Camp.
