Zambia / Chief threatens radio station

LUSAKA, March 19, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ --

Chief Mwanachingwala of the Tonga People of Mazabuka District in the Southern province of Zambia threatened Mazabuka community radio station with closure on 16 March 2010 following a query from the radio station's reporter Justin Kawisha concerning the wrangles that have befallen the chiefdom.

Facts of the matter are that the royal establishment is divided on whether the current Chief Mwanachingwala whose names are Charles Malambo should be dethroned or not. The calls are being made by members of the royal family.

In a phone interview on 17 March 2010 with MISA-Zambia, Station Manager Bellon Chintomba said that on 17 March 2010, the chief verbally attacked Kawisha when he was awaiting to cover the visit of the British High Commissioner to the Mazabuka District Commissioner .

?The chief asked Justine why he was always following him even though he is not from his chiefdom and alleged that Chintomba was the master-mind behind the continued ?stocking' by Kawisha.

Radio Mazabuka has been running stories regarding the wrangles in Chief Mwanachingwala's chiefdom in which members of the royal family are divided on whether the current Chief should stay in power or be dethroned on allegation of putting the chiefdom into disrepute. The chiefdom is one of the four in the Mazabuka district of Sothern province.
