Travel Channel Accelerates Production With Isilon IQ

Travel Channel Accelerates Production With Isilon IQ

Leading International Broadcaster of Travel-themed Content Partners with Boxer Systems to Deploy Isilon Scale-out NAS, Reducing Production Workload by 30 Percent

SEATTLE, March 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Isilon® Systems (NASDAQ:ISLN) today announced that Travel Channel, the leading international travel broadcaster, has deployed Isilon scale-out NAS as the primary storage solution for its new file-based production, scheduling and distribution workflow. Using Isilon IQ, featuring its OneFS® operating system, Travel Channel has unified content from more than 30,000 tapes onto a single, high-performance, highly scalable shared pool of storage, streamlining data access to reduce its production workload by 30 percent.

"The complexity and scope of our content caused us to waste a lot of time with physical tapes, while the switch to a file-based environment provided us with clear financial and creative advantages," said Matt Westrup, head of operations, Travel Channel. "Boxer was instrumental in the deployment process and now our massive content library is available on-demand. With Isilon, we've expanded our operations into new areas such as video on-demand and Internet TV, which would have been extremely costly with our old workflow."

Working closely with Boxer Systems, Travel Channel has deployed a file-based production, management and distribution system featuring Apple's Final Cut Pro 7 editing tools, Phoenix 7's Zeus media management platform, and transcoding and ingest technology from Telestream. The new unified environment uses Isilon scale-out NAS to power multiple editing suites and viewing stations, increasing data access, availability and reliability.

By deploying Isilon IQ, Travel Channel has unified content from its 30,000 tape media library onto a central repository capable of scaling performance and capacity on-demand to meet intense performance and data growth demands. With Isilon scale-out NAS, Travel Channel has eliminated the need to locate, duplicate and ingest media from its tape library, reducing its production staff's workload by 30 percent and enabling them to focus their efforts on producing more content faster, and with higher quality.

"We selected the Isilon solution instead of a SAN as it provided us with several clear advantages in terms of compatibility, performance and reliability," added Westrup. "The solution requires minimal management and our data is always 100 percent available."

"As leading media companies look to increase productivity and reduce costs, they need leading-edge technologies that create seamless, end-to-end solutions," said Mark Stevens, VP and general manager for EMEA, Isilon Systems. "Travel Channel is at the forefront of this shift and its use of Isilon IQ to unify the entire production workflow is indicative of the productivity and cost-saving benefits our solutions deliver."
