Tenor Anthony Kearns to Make American Operatic Debut in 'Romeo and Juliet: Then and Now' with Opera Naples on Feb. 20, 2010
NAPLES, Fla., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tenor Anthony Kearns will make his American operatic debut as Romeo in the Opera Naples (FL) rendition of Romeo and Juliet: Then and Now on Sat., Feb. 20 and Sun., Feb. 21, 2010.
Kearns will be performing for the first time as Shakespeare's most famous lover - although he already has several operatic roles to his credit, including Fenton in Falstaff, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicci, as lead tenor in Faust, and Carmen's Don Jose.
The Opera Naples' interpretation draws from Charles Gounod's Romeo and Juliet and Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Kearns will sing as Romeo in the first half of the performance and as Tony from a more modern era in the second. The two performances are expected to showcase the extraordinary depth and range of Kearns' vocal abilities.
"I've always felt that my voice is well suited for opera - and I'm pleased to have this opportunity to develop my craft," said Kearns.
Kearns, who is widely known as a founding member of the popular singing group, The Irish Tenors, will perform with soprano Heather Buck as Juliet at the International Design Center-Estero.
Kearns' performance comes on the heels of having filmed a new PBS special last week in Prague, entitled "Halleluiah Broadway," that is set to air later this year. Kearns will continue his foray into the opera world in his home country of Ireland, in a production of Carmen in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, from June 16-20, 2010.
Last month, Kearns was named "Best Irish Tenor" by the Irish Music Association, and he has long been critically praised for his vocal abilities and effortless range.
Kearns' recent engagements include a highly-publicized holiday reception at the prestigious Capitol Hill Club in Washington, D.C., and two special performances at the inaugural festivities of Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell.
In addition to his robust solo schedule, Kearns continues to tour biannually with The Irish Tenors. Kearns and The Irish Tenors will begin their Spring Tour in Philadelphia, PA on March 5, 2010.
