HDNet's 'Dan Rather Reports' Visits Haiti in the Aftermath of the Devastating Earthquake

Tonight's program examines the progress of humanitarian aid efforts and presents heartbreaking footage of death and destruction - Tuesday, February 23 at 8:00 p.m. ET

DALLAS, Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Tonight's Dan Rather Reports looks at the progress in the massive humanitarian effort in Haiti. Rather and his team traveled through tent cities and demolished neighborhoods, visited hospitals and makeshift food distribution centers to report on what's working and what's not in Port au Prince, the Haitian capital. The program that results is a series of fascinating portraits of the displaced and dispossessed.

"We had a unique opportunity to spend time with many Haitians and hear their stories. And with the format of this program we are able to really let the viewer inside like no one else does," said Rather. "With an hour devoted to one story, we can let it breathe and explain the situation that is often so brushed over in the cable television world."

The United States military still has more than 13,000 soldiers in Haiti and Rather interviews the commander of the relief effort, Lieutenant General P.K. Keen who says progress has been made but the earthquake's enormous impact will take years to clean up. Rather and Keen also take an aerial tour of the city where you can clearly see just how widespread the impact has been. Tent cities are everywhere.

The biggest job is rubble removal. One government official tells Rather that there is enough debris in the country to fill the Louisiana Superdome, floor to ceiling, six times.

Food distribution continues to improve but the wait to receive a bag of rice can be hours. The hospitals are still packed with patients. There's not a spare bed anywhere in the city. And now the emotional toll is beginning to show. Psychiatrists say children are having an especially difficult time dealing with the loss of their families and their homes.

"Dan Rather Reports - Aftershock" airs Tuesday, February 23 at 8:00 p.m. ET and will re-air at 11:00 p.m. ET to accommodate West Coast Prime Time.
