Scripps TV Affiliates Raise More Than $1.1 Million for Haiti Relief

Scripps TV Affiliates Raise More Than $1.1 Million for Haiti Relief

CINCINNATI, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Through the generosity of their audiences, The E.W. Scripps Company's (NYSE:SSP) ABC and NBC stations raised a total of more than $1.1 million for Haiti relief through simultaneous live telethons on Tuesday evening, Jan. 19.

Funds will support the areas that the American Red Cross has identified as Haitians' greatest needs: food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.

"We have extremely charitable people in all of our communities - callers continued to phone in donations long after our telethons ended," said Brian Lawlor, senior vice president of the Scripps television division. "In light of today's after-shocks in Haiti, we encourage those still wishing to help to donate to the American Red Cross. To make it easier to pledge, we have posted links and provided free ad space for the Red Cross on all of our stations' Web sites."

The individual TV Web sites can be found on Scripps.com.

The telethons pre-empted regular programming to reach the maximum audiences, generally aired for three hours on:

-- KNXV Channel 15 in Phoenix, Ariz. -- WFTS Channel 28 in Tampa, Fla. -- WPTV Channel 5 in West Palm Beach, Fla. -- WMAR Channel 2 in Baltimore, Md. -- WXYZ Channel 7 in Detroit, Mich. -- KSHB Channel 41 in Kansas City, Mo. -- WCPO Channel 9 in Cincinnati, Ohio -- WEWS Channel 5 in Cleveland, Ohio -- KJRH Channel 2 in Tulsa, Okla.

The stations' telethons are just one part of a total Scripps effort to provide compelling news coverage - led by its Florida-based newspapers and TV stations - and much-needed financial assistance. The stations also donated a significant volume of Web-based advertising inventory to the Red Cross to help with fund-raising efforts.
