Youth Documentary Explores National Guard Green Initiatives

Nationwide Search for Aspiring Filmmakers Is on Through September 30

CHICAGO, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- As the world continues to go "green," young adults will go behind the camera, turning the lens on the Army National Guard's environmental initiatives across the country. Now through September 30, youth between the ages of 17 and 22 can apply for an opportunity to join the NG DOCS program. This groundbreaking documentary program gives youth the chance to examine and evaluate how the National Guard is going "green."

HOW IS THE NATIONAL GUARD GOING GREEN?

In order to explore the National Guard's efforts, the young documentarians will visit several National Guard "green" sites. They'll ask the Guard tough questions and consult with renowned experts in the field. The documentaries will dig deep into the National Guard's green efforts, while looking at the effectiveness of their environmental programs.

"The National Guard has been involved in diverse green efforts for years, however not many people across America know about them or understand the work we are trying to do. We're excited to support the 2009 NG DOCS program because we want to give the next generation, who will be affected by the efforts we have put into action, a chance to examine and explore our tactics to preserve America for them and more generations to come," said Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Walls.

Youth selected for the NG DOCS program will work on one of four crews to document the Guard's diverse conservation efforts, producing an hour-long documentary for the world to see.

In Minnesota, documentarians will examine the Guard's efforts to save timber wolves, eagles, black bears and turtles through field research. While in South Carolina, film crews will go into the sea to take a deeper look at how the National Guard is creating reefs using man-made materials. Also to be examined are the Guard's state-wide sustainability plans in Texas and the Guard's efforts to create the nation's largest solar array in Nevada.

The four documentaries will debut online at www.fresh-docs.com where America will vote to determine which National Guard green effort is the most interesting and exciting. In the end, all four documentaries will be edited together to create an hour-long documentary to be aired online, on video-on-demand channels nationwide, and at film festivals from coast to coast.

2009 marks the second year the National Guard has joined forces with Fresh Films, the nation's leading youth film initiative in support of NG DOCS. This program gives young people the unique opportunity to use their voice, perspective, and vision to explore the environmental efforts of the National Guard. In 2008, NG DOCS gave a crew of young adults the chance to tell the real story behind the Midwest flooding relief efforts. Their documentary, "Two Rivers In Iowa," premiered at the prestigious AFI (American Film Institute) Dallas International Film Festival and is scheduled to premiere on cable television this fall.
