Eighth Annual September Concert to Fill Skies With Music On September 11th in Venues Throughout the World
Eighth Annual September Concert to Fill Skies With Music On September 11th in Venues Throughout the World
NEW YORK, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- On September 11, 2009, across America and around the world, the skies will come alive with music as The September Concert Foundation organizes its eighth annual global day of music for peace. On that day, professional and amateur musicians will perform all kinds of music -- classical, jazz, rock & roll -- in a variety of venues, from the steps of the New York Public Library to the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia, from Grosvenor Square in London to the Yalta Art School in the Ukraine.
The creative force behind this day of music is Haruko Smith, who saw an opportunity to transform the pain and anguish of September 11, 2001 into a day of music to celebrate our shared humanity. What began as one person's dream to fill the skies of New York with music, has since grown into an event of global proportions. In 2008, 250 concerts were organized globally with close to 8,000 performers.
This year's concert premieres its newly adopted official song "Give Us Hope." At 2 pm at each venue, a sing-along of the anthem will be held by performers and audiences alike. Written by New York-based composer Jim Papoulis, the song is a gift of promise from children to the future.
Among this year's concerts are the simultaneous events organized by British Memorial Garden Trust in New York (Hanover Square at 12:30 pm) and in London (Grosvenor Square at 5:30 pm); 15 concerts in the city of Rome, with the closing concert to be held in the Sala Santa Cecilia at the Auditorium Parco della Musica for 2,800 people; in Japan, 68 concerts will take place over three days; and more held in Ghana, United Arab Emirates, Haiti and Spain.
The Big Apple Chorus will be back on the steps of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue; Young People's Chorus of NYC at St. Patrick's Cathedral; Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin HS will once again organize and perform in a concert in Washington Square; and the dancers from the National Dance Institute will be at Rockefeller Center. To date, 35 U.S. cities plan to join New York on this day.
All concerts adhere to three basic principles: all venues and musicians are free to design and organize their own concerts; all music and musicians are treated equally, regardless of genre or background, and all music is offered free.
"The September Concert offers an opportunity for people to come together once a year and be united in hopes for peace and celebrate our universal humanity," said Haruko Smith, founder and chairperson of The September Concert Foundation. "Music has a unique power to do that."
