Child Support System Flaws: National Discussion of Money and Emotional Issues Needed, Says Filmmaker Angelo Lobo

Child Support System Flaws: National Discussion of Money and Emotional Issues Needed, Says Filmmaker Angelo Lobo

ATLANTA, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Filmmaker Angelo Lobo's important documentary about flaws in the nation's family court and child support systems comes to Atlanta on September 26, 2009. Lobo says "Support? System Down" (www.supportthemovie.com) tells a side of the story that is not yet heard adequately, but it urgently needs to be told.

"How is it that society accepts the idea of 'standard visitation' which often allows children of divorce or separation to see their beloved parent, usually fathers but sometimes mothers, only 4 days a month, if that? It's not enough time," said Lobo. See "It's About the Kids": http://www.supportthemovie.com/images/flash/trailerD.html

"Support? System Down" comes to the Peachtree Village International Film Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 4 PM, Eastern at Underground Atlanta Event Loft. http://www.supportthemovie.com/news/

Filmmaker, Angelo Lobo, and Carnell Smith, paternity fraud expert and Director of U.S. Citizens Against Paternity Fraud (http://www.paternityfraud.com/ ), will attend "Support?" and address audience questions after the film.

One recent child support case, among many, supports the film's premise that something is seriously wrong with the system. According to CNN (8/11/09), Mr. Frank Hatley, of Georgia, spent a year in jail for owing back child support reimbursement although he is childless. The system knew that Hatley was not the father, yet incarcerated him anyway. Hatley was recently released from jail after his case came to the attention of a human rights group who intervened on his behalf. http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/08/11/georgia.child.support/index.html

"We're trying to bring attention to the case of Frank Hatley and other similar cases and to start a national dialogue about the serious problems in the family court and child support systems. People need a voice. Lobo's film is about giving them, and this civil rights and human rights issue, a voice," said Smith.

Lobo cites the case in the following news story (CBS 2 Chicago, 9/17/09) as another symptom of a broken system. This man's wife had passed away, yet the system continued to pursue him for child support for their 3 children who live with him: http://cbs2chicago.com/local/widower.child.support.2.1191183.html
