Internet Talk Show Targets the Untapped Latina Audience

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- In the over thirty daytime and nighttime talk shows on cable and broadcast network TV you will be hard pressed to find a Latino, let alone a Latina voice. George Lopez aims to change that when he premieres his show Lopez Tonight on TBS. Meanwhile, four Latinas are already bringing cultural relevance to the talk show landscape on their internet talk show Let's Talk! Let's Talk! is a ground breaking English-Language talk show featuring four intelligent, opinionated, hilarious, dynamic and professional Latinas. Emmy-award winning host and actress Marabina Jaimes (Storytime); actress-comedienne Dyana Ortelli (Curb Your Enthusiasm); Bel Hernandez, Publisher of Latin Heat, a print and online magazine; and actress Kikey Castillo are ready to tackle any subject.

Hernandez, who serves as both co-host and executive producer of the show put it this way, "We felt it was time to speak up and be heard," and continues, "Our target audience is Latinas, but our content is universal, we just add a twist of flavor with our perspective."

U.S. Latinas alone can make this show a hit. Latinas are becoming a large and influential segment of the U.S. population. The Census Bureau estimates that the total U.S. Latino population will be 47.8 million by the year 2010 (approximately 14.9% of the total population). Of that figure, 14.1 million are Latinas, and of those, 65% are bilingual or English-speaking only.

There was an increase of 121.3% in Latina-owned businesses between the years of 1997 to 2006. The amount of sales by these Latina-owned, privately held firms generated $44.4 billion, an increase of 64 percent between 1997 and 2004. And these women are increasingly choosing careers in politics as well.

"The one thing missing in the nation's conversation is the Latina voice and that's where we come in. We want to be part of the dialogue," says co-host Jaimes the self-described Mexi-Rican. "I'm tired of being ignored," says actress/comedienne Ortelli, who calls herself the "Last Angry Chicana". But Kikey Castillo, the "recovering Republican" of the group, best described the need for the show. "I am an American, yes I'm Latina, but I'm an American. I'm today's culture."
