Designer of Famous CD Covers Turns Science and Mysticism Into Art

After 15 years of designing CD covers for top Latin celebrities, Vancouver-based Mexican artist Sergio Toporek launches a personal website with artworks that combine modern science with ancient mysticism

VANCOUVER, British Colombia, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- For over a decade, Mexican designer Sergio Toporek has been creating the artwork accompanying the music of Latin recording artists, such as Luis Miguel, Paulina Rubio, Mana, Aleks Syntek and Cafe Tacuba. With more than 80 CD covers to his credit, Latin music lovers have most likely been in contact with his work.

Now Toporek has launched a website (http://www.toporek.com/) presenting a collection of his personal art. The offering is the result of years of exploration into the relationship between contemporary science and ancient mysticism.

Toporek explains the creative process that led him to these intimate works: "Each new piece is a learning experience, an opportunity to discover new aspects of my own reality. They were not created to make any specific statements or assert any truths. Instead, I started every piece with the hope that an unexpected grain of truth would reveal itself to me. The value of my work can be attributed to this intangible process of exploration and its resulting ephemeral glimpses into the mysterious."

Visitors to the website can watch "Digital Art: a Poetic Vision." Written, produced and directed by the artist, this 35 min. animated documentary is a window into the eclectic subjects that inform and inspire his artwork. The result of an intensive, year-long undertaking, the documentary was released immediately to Creative Commons. The video has already received more than 15,000 hits and very favorable reviews from scientists, spiritualists and the general public.

About Sergio Toporek

Sergio Toporek is a Mexican artist, designer and educator based in Vancouver, Canada. He has worked for all major record labels and has created art for top Latin celebrities.

An original member of the Latin Grammy's Blue Ribbon Committee, he participated in the charitable program Grammy at Schools.

Internationally, he has been a guest lecturer at notable educational institutions. He currently teaches a counter-culture course in visual communications at the Vancouver Film School.
