Holland Festival Enhances its Position as International Production Company

Holland Festival Enhances its Position as International Production Company

AMSTERDAM, March 4/PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Holland Festival is presenting its programming for the 62nd edition, themed Serenity & Anxiety. One of the productions standing out this year is Varese 360 degrees, which covers the complete body of work of French-American composer Edgard Varese, supported by video images by video artist Gary Hill. Another striking production is Eine Kirche der Angst vor dem Fremden in mir, created by Christoph Schlingensief - the German theatre and film artist. By producing Varese 360 degrees, the Holland Festival is living up to its ambition to evolve into an international (co-)production company.

Varese 360 degrees, the first production to be staged by the Holland Festival for a long time, will also visit Festival d'Automne in Paris and London's South Bank Centre. In addition, the Festival is co-producing a number of productions, including the opera Aquarius by Goeyvaerts in collaboration with the Flemish Opera; plus the opera Adam in Exile in cooperation with the Netherlands Opera.

On top of that, the Holland Festival is continuing its tradition of bringing contemporary music; work by the icons of the performing arts; as well as important international theatre pieces.

Festival highlights

This year, the festival will open with the Three Solos and a Duet programme to be performed by the world-renowned dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and dancer Ana Laguna. The festival includes many multidisciplinary productions including Heiner Goebbels' I Went to the House but Did Not Enter, which consist of three tableaus sung by the Hilliard Ensemble; as well as a production brought by the Osaka's Bunraku-Za theatre, which rarely ventures outside of Japan. The music and opera programming turns the spotlight on the opera Passion by the French composer Dusapin as well as the dance opera Medea by Sasha Waltz & Guests. The theatre programming gives pride of place to the future Artistic Directors of Munich's theatre companies. Johan Simons is directing Hiob, adapted from the book by Joseph Roth, for the Munchner Kammerspiele; while Martin Kusej is directing Woyzeck by Georg Buchner for the Bayrisches Staatsschauspiel. Other must-see events are South African theatre maker Brett Bailey's and Indian theatre maker Roysten Abel's musical spectacle The Manganiyar Seduction.

The Holland Festival takes place in several venues in Amsterdam, from 4 June till 28 June 2009. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.hollandfestival.nl.
