'Gerrymandering' Is the 'Inconvenient Truth' of American Democracy
(Bill Mundell signs on as executive producer)
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Entertainment trades have picked up one of the most important political stories in 2009. Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are taking notice of Gerrymandering, the latest project of Green Film Company, producers of the groundbreaking documentary on President-elect Obama that was just sold to HBO, and the upcoming Freakonomics.
Clean energy entrepreneur and political reform advocate Bill Mundell, executive producer of Gerrymandering, believes the film's national theatrical release will change politics as usual in every state in the nation as voters learn about the gross corruption that has co-opted their right to representation in the United States Congress and in state legislatures.
"We will finish Gerrymandering in 2009 and are planning for a release in early 2010 for maximum impact on the next round of redistricting. The scope and breadth of this film is unlike any political documentary ever undertaken," says Mundell. "Gerrymandering, the process of drawing districts to protect incumbents and fix elections, is going to be exposed for its negative nationwide impact on our country. We cannot keep the momentum for change in America strong unless we have the power at the ballot box to choose our leaders."
Bill Mundell recently supported California's Proposition 11 which won voter approval for an independent commission to draw district lines for state offices after the 2010 census. For several years prior to that he was a leader in redistricting efforts in multiple states. Gerrymandering will showcase the state by state battles over redistricting and the efforts of reformers to put an end to gerrymandering nationwide.
"From our interviews with governors, legislators, journalists, scholars and reform advocates we've learned firsthand of the dangers gerrymandering poses to our democracy," added Gerrymandering director Jeff Reichert. "I'm excited to continue working with Bill Mundell to raise awareness of this insider issue and spark hunger for change."
"This film will find a worldwide audience. The United States is the only advanced developed democracy in the world that allows politicians to draw their own political districts," added Mundell.
