Indie Torn From The Flag, a Documentary Competing with Narrative Films at the Beverly Hills Hi-Def Film Festival, Takes First Prize

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Klaudia Kovacs' independent sociopolitical historical film Torn from the Flag, about the international decline of communism and the significant global effects of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, won First Prize at the Beverly Hills Hi-Def Film Festival.

The 96-minute documentary covers 1945 through 1991, presenting the rivalry between the superpowers during that time. It shows the 1956 Hungarian Revolution as the first catalyst for the collapse of Soviet communism and as a remarkable turning point for the advancement of democracy. Political notables such as Mikhail Gorbachev, Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, Otto von Habsburg, Georgiou Vassiliou, Arpad Goncz, Imre Pozsgay, Gyula Horn and Janos Berecz appear in person or in archive footage.

Filmmaker Klaudia Kovacs made her film in collaboration with Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC, and multi-award-winning cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs, ASC. The film includes 1956 archive footage shot by both of these Hollywood legends. Mr. Kovacs (no relation) was Director of Photography on Torn from the Flag. This was his first foray into shooting in Hi-Def and his last film before he passed in 2007.

During filmmaking, Panavision accepted Director-Producer-Writer Klaudia Kovacs into its Young Filmmakers' Program, offering her their Sony 900 HD camera with which to shoot the film.

Since Torn from the Flag's premiere in Hollywood in the AFI Fest's "Milestones" section--described by the festival as "celebrating the best of the best"--the film has been selected by 16 festivals and received many awards, including the Tiburon International Film Festival's Golden Reel Award for Best Cinematography, again in competition with narrative films--unheard-of in the documentary genre.

Even though the film has received many international accolades, it has not been welcomed by Hungary's post-communist government so far, and, in spite of Klaudia Kovacs' numerous attempts to premiere the film in her native land, the film has not yet been screened in Hungary.

Torn from the Flag is intended for international theatrical release and television distribution.
