December Sales of TVs Strong, but People Switch to Newer Brands and Smaller Sizes

With the first of 2009's digital switchovers just three months away, price comparison site BuyDigital.tv has seen a large upsurge in site traffic as people shop in the sales which started as early Boxing Day this year.

Whilst sales appear to have remained strong, it seems people are increasingly seeking value, with smaller sizes and less well known brands taking the lead.

In terms of size, 32 inch is currently the most popular, accounting for 34% of sales. This is smaller than six months ago, when 40 inch was the biggest seller. However the larger televisions such as the 42 inch and 40 inch variants aren't too far behind, with 19% and 14% respectively:

Sales of LCD and plasma TVs are dominated by the South Korean manufacturers with LG the top selling brand on 33% of sales, narrowly ahead of Samsung with a 31% share. The better known, and more premium priced Japanese manufactures Sony and Panasonic trailed some way behind with a 14% share each, just ahead of Toshiba with 8%:
