Steinway Supports Lighthouse International's Music School
LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y., Dec. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Steinway & Sons is proud to support Lighthouse International's Filomen M. D'Agostino Greenberg Music School, founded in 1913, in its mission to bring the finest musical experiences to music students who are visually impaired. As part of a unique partnership with the School, Steinway has designed a special new music desk that, when fitted to a Steinway piano, brings sheet music higher and closer to students with vision loss, thus preventing strain and allowing for proper posture and technique.
Many of the pianos currently used in the School are Steinways; however, the average age of the instruments is 84 years, and many are in need of replacement. As part of the school's Piano Replacement Program, Lighthouse launched the "88 Keys Campaign," in which supporters can purchase a single piano key in their name or to honor a loved one for around $500. Funds raised in the campaign will go directly toward the purchase of new Steinway pianos for the School, and for every new piano, Steinway will donate the design and installation of the special music desk.
"The dedication of the School to Steinway pianos is consistent with its mission to help students with vision loss," said Todd Sanders, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Steinway & Sons. "People with impaired vision often have a very keen, heightened sense of hearing, and not just any piano will do. It's important to offer these students the best-sounding pianos in the world. That experience comes only with a Steinway."
"As a teacher and performer myself, I can speak to the fact that the quality of the instrument upon which you work greatly impacts the progress you make," said Dr. Leslie Jones, Executive Director of the Music School. "Since the inception of the School, we have been fortunate to have an inventory of Steinway pianos. We feel that it is very important to continue this valuable legacy."
