Indiana Man Convicted of Obscenity Violations by Federal Jury in West Virginia

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A federal jury in Martinsburg, W.Va., yesterday convicted Loren Jay Adams, 46, of Martinsville, Ind., of six counts of selling and distributing obscene films in West Virginia, Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Criminal Division Matthew Friedrich and U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia Sharon L. Potter announced.

In an indictment returned by the grand jury on May 20, 2008, and unsealed upon his arrest, Adams was charged with transporting obscene matters through the U.S. mail and transportation of obscene matters for sale or distribution by means of interstate commerce in February 2008. At trial, the jury heard testimony that Adams operated through his three businesses - Hard2Find Videos; L & J; and L and J - and that he shipped obscene films from Indiana to Martinsburg through the U.S. mail. In addition to the conviction on charged counts, the jury also found that Adams should forfeit all obscene films in his possession and the Web site used to conduct his business.

Adams was previously convicted in 2002 in Marion County, Ind., for violating Indiana statutes prohibiting exhibition of obscene matter and distribution of obscene matter. His conviction was affirmed by the Indiana Supreme Court. Evidence of Adams' previous conviction in Indiana was offered in support of the charges during this federal trial.

Adams faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000 on each count. A sentencing date has not been set by the court.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin K. Reisenweber from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of West Virginia, Criminal Division Trial Attorney Pamela Satterfield and the Criminal Division's Obscenity Prosecution Task Force, which is based in Washington, D.C. The investigation was conducted by the FBI. Assistance was provided by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
