Coalition of Local Television Holds Press Conference Call on October 10 at 11 am EDT to Discuss Petition and FCC Open Meeting for 'Must Carry' Status of Low Power Television Stations

Coalition of Local Television Holds Press Conference Call on October 10 at 11 am EDT to Discuss Petition and FCC Open Meeting for 'Must Carry' Status of Low Power Television Stations

Over 150 Community Television Stations from 38 States Call for Fair Access to Cable

On Friday October 10th, The Coalition of Local Television along with more than 150 low-power, community-based television stations from around the country will petition the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to move forward with a proposal to give those stations that provide local programming a chance to upgrade their status and qualify under existing law for carriage by cable television systems.

These community stations are critical sources of information for local communities and are threatened by the upcoming DTV transition. They broadcast a wide range of important programming including religious, community, government access, Spanish-language, African American, Korean, South Asian, local news, sports, children's and educational programming and critical weather and emergency advisories.

The Coalition for Local Television will hold a telephone press conference at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday, October 10 to release its petition in advance of the October 15 FCC open meeting. The agenda for that meeting includes an item that would allow the community stations to apply for "full- power" status, which in turn would qualify those stations for "must-carry" status on cable networks.

Many of these stations are minority owned and serve communities ignored by mainstream media outlets. Without the proposed rule change, LPTV stations and many of their customers will be left in the dark when broadcast TV goes digital in 2009.
