The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: Standing Up to Cancer for 60 Years

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Tonight is a momentous occasion as the three major television networks, entertainment industry executives, celebrities and prominent leaders in cancer research and patient advocacy join forces to Stand Up to Cancer. This collaboration, featuring a one-hour simulcast from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET on the three networks -- ABC, CBS and NBC -- offers an unprecedented platform to elevate the discussion about cancer and the need to take action.

For the past 60 years, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has been standing up to cancer, leading the way in discoveries for cancer treatment and raising awareness and hope for thousands of patients and their families each year. Funding from generous donors has allowed LLS to support promising research, and remarkable progress has been made with discoveries benefiting not only blood cancer patients but others as well.

"LLS is committed to increasing the public's understanding of cancers and the need to find cures," said LLS President and CEO John Walter. "Our education and support programs help patients have the best possible outcomes throughout their cancer experience. For patients and their families facing a diagnosis of a leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, LLS is the place to turn for support and information."

LLS is a beacon of help and guidance to those touched by blood cancer. LLS offers a comprehensive array of education and support services to blood cancer patients and their families. There are Family Support Groups, patient education workshops featuring health experts and First Connection, a peer-to- peer support program that matches newly diagnosed patients with trained volunteer survivors. A back-to-school program helps children treated for cancer transition back to school. LLS also provides financial assistance to patients with significant financial need and an insurance co-pay assistance program.

LLS's Web site -- www.LLS.org -- is the definitive resource for information about blood cancers, and the Information Resource Center (IRC) is a call center staffed by master's level social workers, nurses and health educators who provide information, support and resources to patients and their families and caregivers. IRC information specialists are available at (800) 955-4572, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.
