UN and China Should Use "Olympic Truce" as Diplomatic Tool for Darfur
Demand Sudan halt aerial attacks on civilians during the Beijing Games
WASHINGTON, June 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In the wake of a Sudanese government-sponsored bombing of a school and busy marketplace last month, Mia Farrow and Dream for Darfur (www.dreamfordarfur.org), a New York City-based advocacy campaign, will issue a new report on June 24 calling for China, as Olympic host, to call for an "Olympic Truce for Darfur" for an eight week period before, after and during the 2008 Beijing Games. The Olympic Truce dates from ancient Greece and is considered the oldest peace treaty in history. The Olympic Truce was revived in the 1990s as a diplomatic tool, has been used to ensure "safe passage" of athletes and conflict resolution during the Games, and has been endorsed by hundreds of world leaders.
Farrow will be joined by Olympic athletes, including Olympic gold medalist Joey Cheek, who will release a open letter from athletes to the Olympic host nation, asking China to urge its close business partner Sudan to allow humanitarians into Darfur during the Games under the Truce, so they can reach hundreds of thousands of civilians with no access to food, clean water and medical care. Farrow and Cheek will also ask China to insist that the Sudanese regime stop bombing its own citizens during the Olympic Games.
Farrow will also discuss the latest developments surrounding Darfur, Beijing and the Olympics.
