With Father's Day Fast Approaching, TV Dad Bill Engvall Offers Advice to Fathers & Families

ATLANTA, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Bill Engvall is not a family counselor, but he plays one on TV. Plus, he's a father himself.

That's reason enough for Engvall, star of TBS's popular original sitcom The Bill Engvall Show, to deliver some advice to dads and their families just in time for Father's Day.

On the series, which returns for its second season in June, Engvall plays Bill Pearson, a family counselor and loving father who sometimes has trouble practicing what he preaches. For both the show and his popular comedy routines, Engvall -- a veteran headliner with the Blue Collar Comedy Tour -- draws upon his own experiences as the father of two children. "One of the things I learned as a father," he says, "is that there's really no book you can read to learn how to become a parent. It's learn-as-you-go."

   With that in mind, here's what he's learned:   -- "It's all about unconditional love, good or bad."   -- "Admit when you're wrong.  One of the things I'm proud of as a parent      is being able to admit when I make a mistake."   -- "You can't go wrong as long as you're honest with your kids. I recently      had a discussion with my own son about high school drinking.  It was      great that he was talking to me about it, and I could be honest about      my thoughts and experience."   -- "You have to be able to adapt to situations.  You can't always set hard      and fast rules.  Different situations apply, so you have to adjust as      you go along.  It's like the way water becomes a different shape      depending on the glass it's in."   -- "You have to keep the lines of communication open."    

Engvall has received a lot of great Father's Day gifts over the year, including the 1977 Volkswagen van his family gave him last year. But not every gift has to be something as big and pricey as a restored vehicle. "The best gifts are when the kids were young and gave you something like a piece of clay with their finger imprinted on it," he says. "Years later, you watch your child all grown up, walking across the stage to get a diploma, and you remember that piece of clay and appreciate how far along life's journey your child has come."

For families struggling to decide what to do for their dads on Father's Day, Engvall has some easy advice:

   -- "Ask Dad what he wants to do for Father's Day.  It's his day.  If he      wants to sleep until noon, let him."   -- "Spend time together as a family.  One of my favorite things to do on      Father's Day is go to a baseball game with my family.  Fishing is also      a lot of fun.  Whatever you do, though, it needs to be about spending      time together with nothing else going on to distract you."   -- "Tell Dad how great he is.  Last year on Father's Day, I was sitting      with my son, and it was one of those quiet, private moments.  He just      turned to me and said, 'You know, you're a great dad.'  That really      made my day."
