Profile America -- Saturday, September 15th. Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of an actress who appeared in one of the most memorable scenes in movie history -- clutched in the hand of a giant gorilla climbing the Empire State Building. She was Fay Wray, who played the love object of King Kong in the 1933 movie that has been a pop culture icon ever since. Wray was a rancher's daughter from Alberta, Canada, who made many movies at the end of the silent era and in the first years of talking motion pictures. She died at the age of 96, just after being asked to play a cameo role in the 2005 remake of King Kong. When King Kong was first released, 60 million people a week went to the movies.
