DSO Goes to Lansing

DSO Goes to Lansing

Free Performance on June 12 in front of the State Capitol Building Sponsored by Guardian Industries

DETROIT, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- One of Michigan's premier cultural attractions, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra takes music to diverse audiences across its home state each summer. In a special salute to the great State of Michigan, the DSO will give a special, free performance on Tuesday, June 12 in downtown Lansing, MI. Audiences are invited to enjoy a lunchtime concert, sponsored by Guardian Industries, beginning at 12 p.m. in front of the State Capitol Building.

Led by Resident Conductor Thomas Wilkins, the theme of the concert is "No Place Like Home," featuring popular American composers and favorite patriotic tunes, and conveying the concept of "pride of place." Prior to the concert, a DSO flute duo will open the Senate session at 10 a.m. with a short performance. DSO President and Executive Director Anne Parsons will address the Senate concerning the arts and its importance to the economic growth and development of the State of Michigan. Assisting Guardian and the DSO on this visit to Lansing is the State Capitol Facilities Office.

"We're especially looking forward to this performance for the residents and employees of our state capitol," said Anne Parsons. "The DSO has represented Michigan all over the world, through broadcasts and on tours, but there really is no place like home. We're grateful to Guardian for making this day -- and many like it around the world -- possible."

Enabling the DSO to travel to Lansing is the Guardian Touring Fund, established by Auburn Hill-headquartered Guardian Industries, a longtime supporter of the DSO. The fund presented tours of Europe in 1989 and 2001, and Florida in 2001. In 07-08, Guardian is also sponsoring a unique musical exchange, in which the DSO and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra will share their respective musical traditions with audiences in each other's hometowns. (The DSO performs in Toronto's Roy Thompson Hall on November 8, 2007; and the TSO debuts in Detroit's Orchestra Hall on March 14, 2008.)

For nearly a century, the internationally acclaimed Detroit Symphony Orchestra has achieved greatness with unforgettable performances, visionary maestros and illustrious guest artists. The standard of musicianship and artistry on the stage of Orchestra Hall is admired throughout the world. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is heard live by over 425,000 people annually.
