Russian Documentary on the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations Screened at the UN Headquarters Today

MOSCOW and NEW YORK, Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- On 24 October, 2005, a Russian Documentary on the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations will be screened at the UN Headquarters. The screening will be a part of Celebratory Events at UNHQ New York on UN Day.

The documentary, by producer Vitaly Ignatenko, with Author and Host Mikhail Gusman, and directed by Murad Ibragimbayov was produced by the Russian News Agency ITAR-TASS in cooperation with TV Channel One Russia. It includes firsthand accounts of the history of the UN, its key decisions and the major activities of its principal bodies, including the Security Council, the General Assembly and the International Court.

In interviews in the documentary, current and former UN Secretaries General Kofi Annan, Kurt Waldheim, Javier Perez de Cuellar, Boutros Boutros Ghali, as well as US President George W. Bush, President of France Jacques Chirac, leader of China Hu Jintao, Prime Minister of United Kingdom Tony Blair, Russian Foreign Minister and former UN Ambassador Sergey Lavrov and many other prominent politicians and diplomats share their views on the past and present of the UN.

The production depicts the role of the UN today as the center of effective multilateral system aimed at addressing global threats and challenges of the XXI century. Among those are the need to enhance common efforts to achieve progress in the areas of combating international terrorism, strengthening peace and security, promoting sustainable development, human rights and dignity for all. Produced in dynamic style using split screen and computer graphics, the film runs for 80 minutes.

The documentary will be shown simultaneously for the two consecutive nights -- Oct. 24 and 25 -- on the Channel One Russia, primary National TV Network with an audience of 150 million.
