Finalists Announced in $10,000 Buckingham Art Prize

NEW YORK, Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The three finalists of the 2005 "Buckingham Prize for the Expression of Music through Art" have been announced, and the artwork will be unveiled October 24 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Art Students League 215 West 57th Street in New York -- one of the co-sponsors of the Buckingham Prize.

The Buckingham Prize, a juried art competition opened to college students throughout the nation, was created by New York's Buckingham Hotel to promote paining visualizing music in all its forms. Three cash purchase prizes will be awarded upon the conclusion of judging, with $7,000 going to the first prize winner and prizes of $2,000 and $1,000 going to second and third place winners.

The three finalists will hang at the ASL publicly in October, and later as part of the Buckingham Hotel's permanent art collection. The Buckingham Hotel will award the $10,000 in prize money to the three winners in a ceremony in November at the Hotel.

The Buckingham Prize will be judged by a panel of prestigious figures from major art institutions including Ira Goldberg, Director of the Art Students League of New York; and Graham Nickson, Dean of the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture -- both of which institutions are co-sponsoring the Prize along with Dennis Adams, Acting Dean, School of Arts, Cooper Union; Annette Blaugrund, Ph. D., National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts; John Torreano, Program Director of the MFA program in Studio Art at New York University and Barrett White, Assistant Vice President of Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art.

This year's Buckingham Prize is launched in partnership with OOK(R) Art and Picture Hanging Hardware.

The Buckingham Hotel, located at 101 West 57th Street across from Carnegie Hall, sponsors this competition because of the musical heritage that is woven throughout the its history; when this history is combined with West 57th Street's own artistic tradition, "musical artwork" is the natural result.
