Telenet Deploys Intellon-based HomePlug(R) 1.0 Adapters

Telenet Deploys Intellon-based HomePlug(R) 1.0 Adapters

Belgium's Largest Cable Operator Now Offering HomePlug Ethernet Adapters to Subscribers to Ease Installations of Broadband and IDTV

OCALA, Fla., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Intellon Corporation, the leading provider of HomePlug-compatible IC's for home networking, networked entertainment and connected powerline applications, today announced that Telenet, the largest cable operator in Belgium, has selected Intellon-based HomePlug 1.0 products as its preferred solution for in-home installations of broadband as well as its upcoming interactive digital television (IDTV) service slated for full rollout this month. The HomePlug devices are being deployed for residential customers as a means to instantly network data traffic throughout the entire home over the existing electrical wiring in the walls.

Telenet's subscribers may now enjoy highly reliable broadband content in any room while avoiding the inconvenience of installing new in-home cabling. HomePlug 1.0 adapters streamline the deployment of new services, enabling users to distribute their digital content more quickly and with less installation effort.

The HomePlug adapters Telenet is deploying instantly convert any power outlet into an Ethernet port with bandwidth up to 14 Mbps. Users simply plug the devices into a standard wall outlet and use the home's existing electrical network to transfer data from room to room.

"We were looking for a simple and reliable solution that would enable us to streamline the subscriber installation process," said Peter Michiels, Telenet's Vice President of Networks, Development and Operations. "The HomePlug adapters allow us to concentrate our engineers on providing assistance to the customer with issues pertaining to service itself, cutting down on set-up time while increasing the number of installations per day."

"Wireless networking is instrumental in driving productivity and providing convenience for the home user. But to ensure consistent throughput of multimedia services throughout the home network, there's still room for improvement," stated Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst of Parks Associates, a Dallas-based market research firm that specializes in residential and small office technology analysis. "Content service providers are now taking a second look at broadband over powerline as an alternate solution for delivering services within the home, offering cost savings both to themselves and the user."
