LogicaCMG Embarks on Key Galileo Service Centre Development Contract
LONDON, September 5/PRNewswire/ -- LogicaCMG has been awarded a contract to develop a prototype version of the Galileo Service Centre, which will form the heart of the commercial operation of Europe's three billion Euro satellite navigation programme - Galileo.
"The Service Centre will provide the interface to Galileo users and service providers, in particular in relation to commercial issues," said Mr Eric Gellée, director of FDC (France Developpement Conseil). "It is therefore a crucial element in ensuring wide commercial uptake of the Galileo services and those of the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), Galileo's precursor."
The LogicaCMG contract is part of a wider programme called the "Galileo Reference Mission" which was awarded to FDC of France by the Galileo Joint Undertaking. This initiative addresses what the Galileo system provides users in terms of mission, services and signals. These functions are deemed fundamental for applications development and receiver manufacturers.
Steve Smart, director space and satellite communications at LogicaCMG said: "LogicaCMG is recognised as a world leader in mobile telephony applications, a critical market for Galileo's positioning services. The Service Centre will be at the heart of integrating Galileo's services into mass-market applications such as road pricing, traffic information, local shopping details or a child locator. We have supplied similar solutions that have made other programmes operationally successful - the Skynet 5 military communications satellite project is a recent example."
LogicaCMG's systems process two out of every three text messages sent in the world. We have delivered one out of every four multimedia messaging centres installed by wireless service providers across the globe. Our solutions serve more than 800 million active mobile phone subscribers worldwide. We delivered the first secure e-commerce transaction over a mobile phone. We are helping the Dutch local government to manage the road network more effectively with its innovative traffic information service, based on the GSM network.

About Galileo
Galileo, the European satellite radio navigation programme is global in scope. It is being financed by both public and private funds. Given that the growth prospects for product and service markets connected with satellite radio navigation are considerable, the decision was taken to manage and operate the system in the form of a concession, as part of a public-private partnership.
Galileo will provide the first satellite positioning and navigation system specifically for civil purposes. Its profitable applications will spread into all areas of our lives - starting with more safe and efficient transport. Using small receivers, individuals will be able to determine their locations to within a few meters. Galileo will offer state-of-the-art and new services with outstanding performance in accuracy, continuity and availability. The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) is Europe's first foray into satellite navigation. It disseminates correction data to improve the accuracy of the current Global Positioning system (GPS) services from about 20metres to better than 5metres.
The Galileo Joint Undertaking has been set up by the EC and European Space Agency (ESA) to manage the development phase of the Galileo project. This includes the selection of the future Galileo concessionaire, the integration of EGNOS and the management of Galileo related activities within the 6th Framework Programme.
