Encore Westerns Opens Up 'The New Frontier'

Contemporary Westerns Rounds Up Fresh Film Series

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Hit the "high country" and head into "The New Frontier" with Encore Westerns this October. This hip, hard ridin', pistol packin' collection of movies showcases contemporary Westerns and represents a new generation in frontier filmmaking. "The New Frontier" is your destination for cutting edge cowboy flicks produced after 1990 every Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT), starting on October 1st.

"It's a new dawn for the Western which has endured since the birth of cinema," said Michael Ruggiero, vice president of programming and scheduling at SEG. "Through the modern day interpretations of the genre, that viewers will see as part of 'The New Frontier' programming initiative, the Wild West lives on for a new generation of film fans."

"The New Frontier" debuts on Saturday, October 1st at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT). The schedule is as follows:

* October 1 -- "Open Range" (2003) -- Academy Award(R)-winning director Kevin Costner ("Dances With Wolves") helms this tale of a group of free-grazing cattlemen (Robert Duvall, Costner, Diego Luna and Abraham Benrubi) who are forced to take up arms when they are attacked by a corrupt Sheriff (James Russo) and kingpin rancher (Michael Gambon). The film co-stars Annette Bening,

* October 8 -- "Bad Girls" (1994) -- Andie MacDowell, Drew Barrymore, Madeleine Stowe and Mary Stuart Masterson star in this Wild West story of four fallen women on the run. Four prostitutes join together to avoid a lynching, and become embroiled in bank robberies, shoot-outs and romance. The film co-stars Dermot Mulroney.

* October 15 -- "Cold Mountain" (2003) -- In the waning days of the American Civil War, a wounded soldier (Jude Law) embarks on a perilous journey home to his mountain community, hoping to reunite with his pre- war sweetheart (Nicole Kidman). Directed by Academy Award(R)-winner Anthony Minghella ("The English Patient" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley") and based on the best-selling novel by Charles Frazier, the film co-stars Renee Zellweger and Eileen Atkins.

* October 22 -- "Into the Badlands" (1991) -- A greedy bounty hunter (Bruce Dern) sets off a mysterious chain of events as he searches the west for a wanted outlaw named Red Roundtree. The film co-stars Mariel Hemingway, Helen Hunt and Dylan McDermott.

* October 29 -- "Hooded Angels" (2000, a.k.a. "Glory Glory") -- After being caught up in an American Civil War skirmish, an enraged band of women form an outlaw gang called the Hooded Angels to get revenge on the society that failed them. The film stars Chantelle Stander, Paul Johansson, Juliana Venter, Amanda Donohoe and Gary Busey.
