'Today's Family' to Feature PLCB Bureau Of Alcohol Education
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Bureau of Alcohol Education will be featured on the latest episode of "Today's Family," a national educational television show.
The show is scheduled to air on WPQX-TV out of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area, on Friday, July 15, at 7:30 a.m.; Wednesday, July 20, at 7:30 a.m.; Saturday, July 23 at 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday, July 30 at 5:30 p.m.
The seven-minute segment will focus on the bureau's efforts to combat underage drinking in Pennsylvania. The bureau provides funding, staffing, training and materials to help local schools, communities, police departments and colleges implement strategies to address the problem at the local level.
Steve Schmidt, director of the Bureau of Alcohol Education, appears on the show to discuss the PLCB's efforts to create a "cultural shift" in the attitudes that accept underage drinking as a normal rite of passage for teens. He says parents and other adults have a very large influence on the behavior of the youth around them.
"They (adults) need to speak with young people about the dangers and consequences of drinking underage," Schmidt says on the show. "Secondly, they need to make certain that they're not making it easy for young people to access alcohol."
PLCB Chairman Jonathan Newman said he welcomed the opportunity for the PLCB to be featured on the show. "Underage drinking leads to thousands of deaths and injuries each year," Newman said. "The PLCB consistently has been committed to preventing alcohol use by minors, and I'm proud that our alcohol education staff is receiving this national recognition for its hard work."
