LOS ANGELES, July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Street dance crews from across the nation and the world are bringing their best moves to Los Angeles with the hope of taking home the top bragging rights and titles in the 2005 USA and World Hip Hop Championships.
Tagged "the Olympics of Hip Hop dance", participants serve up old school and new school moves in two-minute performances. Dance crews consisting of five to eight members are divided into Junior (ages 7-12), Varsity (ages 12-17) and Adult (18+). 'Breaking Battles', featuring top B-Boys, are also a part of both championships.
Winners of the USA Championship (August 19) advance to the World Hip Hop Championship on August 21 to compete against crews selected by their home countries. Represented are Japan, Brazil, Trinidad & Tobago, UK, Italy, Ireland, Philippines, and more. Celebrity choreographers HiHat (Missy Elliott) and Shane Sparks ("You Got Served" and B2K) are among the judges. Actor, comedian Chris Spencer, former host of late night TV talk show "Vibe", will host.
A special feature within the World Championship is the 2005 Living Legends of Hip Hop Award that will be presented to Don Campbell (creator of "Locking", Don's life story will be presented in an upcoming movie starring Usher in the title role), Boogaloo Sam (creator of "Popping" and the "Electric Boogaloo"), and Tommy the Clown (creator of "Clowning" which has evolved into a dance art form called "Krumping". Tommy is featured in the newly released film documentary "Rize").
The award presentation occurs on Sunday, August 21 at 9:00 p.m. In addition, the three icons will be joined by Easy Roc of the original Rock Steady Crew and head up a panel discussion on the evolution of Hip Hop at 12:00 noon the same day at the Manhattan Beach Marriott Hotel.
"It's incredible that the Hip Hop dance moves and attitude that were once exclusive to the streets of urban America are now embraced all over the world," said Howard Schwartz, the President of Los Angeles' Hip Hop International, producers of the Championships. "This year we are especially pleased to have the support of Mountain Dew, John Paul Mitchell Systems, and Boogiezone.com, an online dance community website."
"The style and energy of The Hip Hop International Championships and its relevance to our consumers made it a great fit for Mountain Dew," said David Orr, Field Marketing Director of the Pepsi Bottling Group Southern California.
"For us, it's the artistic creativity, freedom of expression and teamwork that's showcased at the Championships that make them a natural fit for our company," stated Julie Solwold, V.P. of Sports and Special Events for John Paul Mitchell Systems.
