Emmis & Radio One Announce Additional Donation to the Center for Leadership Development

$100,000 designated for the construction of the High Achievement Learning Center

INDIANAPOLIS, July 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Emmis Communications (NASDAQ:EMMS) and Radio One, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROIAK)(NASDAQ:and)(NASDAQ:ROIA) are pleased to announce the joint donation of $100,000 to the Center for Leadership Development from the Emmis/Radio One Community Fund. This is in addition to the Fund's joint donation to the Indiana Black Expo's Rev. Williams Prostate Cancer Unit, announced at Thursday's Black Expo luncheon.

This gift to the Center for Leadership Development will support CLD's plans to build a new High Achievement Learning Center. The Center for Leadership Development fosters the advancement of minority youth in Central Indiana by giving them the support and skills needed to become future professional, business and community leaders. The new Learning Center will allow the CLD to double its ability to provide services and resources to area students and parents.

In January 2001, Emmis and Radio One jointly announced a $1 million donation to support non-profit organizations that promote the Central Indiana African-American community.

"CLD combines an individual's passion and personal motivation with the tools and resources needed to be academically successful. Partnering with CLD on this project to mentor Central Indiana minority students just makes good business sense. These students will become the leaders of tomorrow," said Emmis Chairman and CEO Jeff Smulyan.

"Education is something the Radio One stations have always been concerned about. After learning of the great work the Center for Leadership Development has done in Indianapolis with minority youth, we're honored to be able to help CLD in increasing its ability to help more minority youth to achieve," Alfred C. Liggins III, Radio One's President and CEO, said.

"The Center for Leadership Development is sincerely honored to receive this tremendous $100,000 grant from the Emmis/Radio One Community Fund in support of our $2.8 million capital campaign to build this inspiring, forward- thinking High Achievement Learning Center. We thank the companies of Emmis Communications and Radio One for their support. Moreover, we thank them for their deep confidence in CLD and in our great mission to help empower hundreds of Central Indiana African-American youth to excel in academics, college, and career. Central Indiana youth will be the beneficiaries of this great gift for years to come. Our community has responded beautifully to this important project to empower our youth. Needless to say, we are grateful and overjoyed," said Dennis Bland, CLD's President.

The Emmis/Radio One Community Fund responds to problems and issues facing the Central Indiana Community. Rather than soliciting grant applications, the philosophy of the Fund is to evaluate the needs of the community and provide timely and effective solutions to our community challenges.
